Fighting Off Summer Colds, Prevention is Key

With cold weather behind us and Summer in full swing, we have traded flu season for those dreaded days of allergy induced congestion and sinus headaches. No one wants to be coughing and sniffling while they’re relaxing on the beach.

Salt on the Rocks is here to give you some tips on how to fight off a summer cold so you can enjoy time with friends and family. Prevention is key when it comes to getting the jump on summer sicknesses.

We all know the routine of “Wash your hands after touching EVERYTHING and cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze.”  But, did you think of some of these extra things you can do as well.

1.  Wash all door knobs and handles weekly
2. Wipe your remote control
3. Wipe your cell phone (daily is best)
4. Wipe your keys weekly
5. Wash your steering wheel and ALL door handles, especially those in the back seat
Some wonderful options for supporting your healthy style during the summer is plant medicine.
Elderberry syrup is my favorite preventative measure for any season, due to the antiviral, antibacterial, antibiotic, and powerful immune boosting qualities of Elderberries. We mix it with our local honey as well as cinnamon and ginger to give it that syrupy sweet taste as well as boost its effectiveness.  Not a fan? Elderberries can also be tinctured and will be just as effective at treating cold symptoms. Elderberry should not be used long term and not for those with over active immune systems.
Another quick and easy way to help your body kick a cold is Echinacea. Studies show Echinacea increases the number of white blood cells in your body, which aid in fighting infection. It is believed to be one of Mother Nature’s most powerful antibiotics and can be used to alleviate symptoms caused by strep throat, sore throat, ear infections, colds, and so much more. Tinctured or made into a tea, Echinacea is a must in any household and can be taken preventatively or situationally.
